How To Submit a Problem Report
To make it easier for you, us, and other J&.Unix users to look for the state of all reports, we ask you to use our standard form. Filling out the fields is straight-forward and helps us a LOT.
Well, it's not that straight-forward. Check out the list of standard field values so that we all agree what Priority: medium shall mean.
There are several ways to submit the form.
- Get our "send-pr" package and install it on your system. Using this kit is the preferred way to submit reports. The package gives you
- A shell script "send-pr" to fill out the standard form with your standard editor.
- A set of emacs macros for those who prefer to use that kitchen sink.
- The current set of categories for J bug reports.
- Some instructions how to fill out a bug report, what the various fields and their values mean, etc.
- Your unix box may already have the send-pr utility installed. (This is the case for FreeBSD and many Linux distributions out of the box. Just try to invoke "send-pr -V".) Follow these four simple steps then.
- If you cannot use send-pr, all is not lost. Take this template, fill it out, and email it to "[email protected]". This is almost the same as using the send-pr utility, but you have to fill out everything on your own and don't get the nice error checking that send-pr provides. However, as long as you get the mail address right, we will eventually be able to file your report with the database.
Once you have submitted your report and it is filed at our site, you'll receive a confirmation including a unique ticket reference like j-unix/54.
Per default, all bug reports are marked as "confidential". If you mark your report as non-confidential, it will show up on this web server. That is, here.
Having your report public is preferred since it helps to avoid some waste of time both submitters and supporters.
